Disgusted at last nights eat well for less

The women on last nights eat well for less was spending more in a week on food that some people have in a month to spend ,
Alright she could probably afford it having her own dance school but it was disgusting she said she had a phobia of big supermarkets and shopped at the local garage shops or one stop small tescos

I think the producers of programs like this should come into the real world , Yes people need educating about food and swapping brands etc but surely there is a better way to do it , people need to go back to basics with ordinary cheap ingredients ,
Even when i was working full time i spent sunday mornings batch baking and filling the freezer with meals for the week like spag bowl spaghetti bolognese, chilli , pizza , quick meals were simple egg and chips with beans or stir frys ,
There are lots of frugal food bloggers out there who would really contribute to this type of program , simple frugal meals and cakes and puddings like these.

  1. I am just about to watch it on catch up. I've seen the ad for it and if I didn't have such a sore throat I am sure I would be shouting at the computer.

  3. The people on these programs make for "good" tv and up the viewing figures, Those amongst us who practise frugality are far too boring. Translated to read that we would not make the presenters look good and clever.

  4. I've only recently discovered that programme and I really enjoy it - unusual for me as you know as I can't bear cookery programmes. I'm fascinated by the psychology, how people are brainwashed into thinking brands are best and never recognising them in blind taste tests and how it always seems to be the woman's responsibility to put food on the table even if there's two partners in a relationship and both work full-time. Thank goodness I live with a bloke who can also cook - and enjoys healthy vegetarian food (despite being an occasional meat eater).
I think the presenters do a great job of making scratch cooking fun and even for a professionally trained chef like me there's plenty of inspirational ideas for meals - that papaya salad last night, for instance, swap the fish sauce for a hot pepper alternative and I'd eat that every day.
I felt sorry for last night's subject. On the surface an attractive, highly successful woman with an lovely relationship with her daughter but terrified of supermarkets (who can blame I, I send Jon, I hate them, too). One of our best friends lives like that - shopping daily for his meals as he has no concept (or interest) in planning ahead. At the end of the day he's got a good job, has no debt, he's paid off his mortgage and travels abroad a few times a year - who am I to start carping on about meal planning and frugality? Knowing how much he likes a pudding maybe I could send him round yours, he'd love your baking!!!
Batch cooking on a Sunday? Ye Gods! Back in the days when I was a full-time employee Sunday was for recovering from a hangover. xxxx

  5. I like the look on there faces when they see the savings they made or when they realise they have not swapped there favorite item but they are sure they have , i did a salad today for my lunch with mackerel but added tinned pineapple instead of papaya inspired by that dish , I hate food shopping too i go every couple of weeks and stretch it out as much as i can xxx

  6. All your photos would do credit to a cookery book!! Read your blog for ages and love it. Like yourself I have health problems but I still manage to cook and bake. On the days I am tired we eat from the freezer until I recover. I do not mind the programme you are discussing but I think a truly frugal cook on there would stun them. The Asian dietician usually has some good ideas and simple recipes, I like her. Not sure about the two presenters but I do like Delia Smith and love to watch her Christmas programmes. Oh, I sound like a simple soul but all food is energy, and we should eat to live not the other way about. Love Andie xxx

  8. many thanks I shall be able to find the recipe now. I live in the West Riding of Yorkshire but I used to live in Essex. Bread pudding was a delicacy down there. The first time someone offered me some I thought they meant bread and butter pudding and thought it was a bit odd to offer a pudding with a cup of tea!! I was pleasantly surprised and liked the flavour, I shall make some tomorrow. I shall also make some madeleines, the French recipe as they are my hubbies favourite. Thank you for your help and have a good weekend. Love Andie xxx

  9. We used to caravan at Reighton Sands in the 90's in the gingerbread caravan, although we were not a single parents family we used to help out with the yearly rent and we always rented when no one else wanted it. It is very handy there for the East Coast. If you are well enough venture over into the Dales, we live ten minutes away from the gateway to the Dales and it is beautiful. If you do let me know and you can come and sample some of my baking, and the kettle is always on. Love Andie xxx

  11. I saw it too, how ridiculous. That type of episode is just rubbing it in the face of those who can't afford to eat properly. Maybe she can afford it but what a waste. I was muttering at the TV. x
